History of Fairview House

The house has stood in the North Highlands Historic District for over a century. Built in 1910 by Irvin Elias Rice, Highlands’ town butcher, and his wife Lilly, it began as a private family home that occasionally welcomed summer guests.

In 1938, it became known as the Fairview Inn under the ownership of John and Ellie Potts. The home hosted actors from the Highlands Playhouse, longtime family friends, and travelers seeking mountain air and simple comfort.

The home became a bed and breakfast starting in the 1970s, known for some time as the 4 1/2 Street Inn before the current owners purchased it in 2016 and began restoration in 2018.

Today, Fairview House honors that long tradition of hospitality. Much of the original craftsmanship remains intact, from the graceful staircases and original mantels to the rich cherry floors, thanks to extensive and careful renovations by the current proprietor.

Outside, the house is bordered by professional landscaping including tall evergreens, rhododendrons, and a south-facing terraced lawn perfect for relaxing or gathering in the shade.

With ten spacious bedrooms, each with its own private bath, Fairview House stays true to its roots as a welcoming, restful, and generous space—where guests can arrive, settle in, and feel completely at ease.
